Lake Sabljaci
This artificial lake is a popular place for fishing, swimming and relaxing by the water. It is surrounded by greenery, ideal for picnics and walks, only about 3 kilometers from Ogulin and only a few hundred meters below our house. The Sabljaci lake accumulates the water of the Zagorska Mrežnica river, which originates in Ogulinka Zagorje and is collected in the lake for the needs of the Gojak Hidroelektrana electricity production. The surface of the lake is about 170 hectares. It is the eleventh largest lake in the Republic of Croatia and many call it the “Ogulin Sea”. The lake hosts “Lake Games”, various water sports such as rowing, sailing, swimming and diving, sport fishing and more. Jesero Sabljaci is connected to Lake Bukovnik and the Gojak Hydroelectric Power Plant by a tunnel.
Lake Bukovnik
Lake Bukovnik is an artificial lake on the river Dobra, only one kilometer from the center of Ogulin (Gornja Dobra or Ogulinska Dobra), just before the river sinks into the Đula abyss.
Hydropower plant Gojak
This technical monument and hydroelectric power plant was built on the Dobra River and is an interesting excursion for those interested in the history of energy and industrial heritage.
Đulin's abyss
This natural phenomenon is located in the very center of Ogulin. The River Dobra plunges underground here, creating a spectacular scene. Legend has it that it was named after the girl Đula (Zulejka) who threw herself into the abyss because of unrequited love.
Šmitovo lake
Šmitovo jezero, located near Ogulin, is one of the hidden natural gems in this area. This lake is smaller in size, but offers a beautiful landscape. There is also a folk legend connected to the lake, according to which St. George saved the girl from the dragon, and the imprint of a horse’s hoof is preserved on a stone next to the lake.
Riv erZagorska Mrežnica
Zagorska Mrežnica springs near the villages of Desmerice and Ogulinsko Zagorje and supplies drinking water to Ogulin and the surrounding area. The source is a rich site of underground fauna, of which the endemic species of the Ogulin area are particularly significant, such as the underground cave sponge (lat. Eunapius subterraneus), unique in the world and distributed only in the Ogulin area. The source is also a habitat for manfish (lat. Proteus anguinus) and several species of shrimp. It was found to be a significant paleontological and archaeological site. The remains of a Roman amphora, as well as the remains of elephant and rhinoceros teeth, were found in the spring.
Klek Mountain
Klek Mountain, with its distinctive shape, is an ideal place for hiking and enjoying nature. There is a mountain lodge at the top of the mountain, and the ascent offers a wonderful view of the surroundings. Klek is also one of the most popular hiking destinations in Croatia. It is considered the cradle of Croatian mountaineering, and the first recorded ascent to the top is associated with Ban Josip Jelačić.
Bijela and Samarska stijene nature park
Located near Ogulin, this nature park is known for its impressive limestone formations and untouched nature. Numerous trails are ideal for hiking and exploring.
Ski area Vučići
The Vučići ski resort is only 1.5 km from the center of Ogulin in Vučić Selo and was built by the volunteer work of the members of the Ogulin Ski Club, which manages and maintains the ski resort. The ski resort has 450 m of ski slopes with two lifts, 100 m of toboggan run, lighting for night skiing, auxiliary facilities for visitors’ refreshments, a club room, its own stand for arranging the ski resort and a system with a cannon for artificial snow. There is no entrance fee to the ski resort, but donations from satisfied visitors are accepted. Various events are held at the ski resort: ski schools for all ages, ski races in giant slalom and slalom, sled races, GSS races, etc.
